Report of the 2nd Melbourne Supporters Clubs 5-A-Side Charity Shield Tournament

Sunday June 28, 2009

Version Two of our Charity Shield tournament has once again produced a fantastic day of football festivities. Our thanks to all the clubs who turned out in such great numbers and spirit.

Congratulations must go to Newcastle United (or ‘Aussie Mags’ as they are known locally) who obviously worked through the issues of the last season to power to the title. Tottenham Hotspur must also be congratulated for again reaching the final. They have been the benchmark for each our tournaments to date. Everton also impressed in their first outing taking out 3rd place, as did Chelsea - the big improvers for this tournament.

Most importantly, our footballing odyssey raised $750 for charity. As Charity Shield holders Newcastle United have asked that these funds be directed towards the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. The Foundation focuses on the early detection and treatment of cancer. Through generous support, the Foundation has already equipped the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre, which was constructed by the Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care, Freeman Hospital in Newcastle. It has also funded two specialist research posts, a doctor and a nurse.

As many of you would be aware, Sir Bobby fought cancer an incredible five times. Sadly, 17 years after his first diagnosis, he lost that long and courageous battle on 31 July 2009. He died very peacefully at his County Durham home with his wife and family beside him. For anyone associated with football, his passing is big loss. More information of the life of Sir Bobby and his wonderful foundation can be found here.

The official results from June’s tournament are available by clicking here. Photos from the tournament will be posted in the near future.

Work will soon commence on Version Three of the tournament. At this stage we are targeting the last Sunday of November (29th November 2009). We hope to make this version bigger and better than the last. Two of the improvements we hope to include are an expansion to the number of teams participating and formal sponsorship. We will also draft a Player’s Code of Conduct and an Eligibility Criteria.

Once again, my thanks to all those who participated and for making this such a successful day.
